Matsumae Park & Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival
Where 10,000 Cherry Blossoms Meet Historic Matsumae Castle
A renowned destination where Matsumae Castle and around 10,000 cherry trees create a beautiful spring landscape, featuring staggered blooms and magical illuminated cherry blossoms at night.
Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, Matsumae Park covers about 240,000 square meters and is home to around 10,000 cherry trees. At its heart stands Matsumae Castle, completed in 1854, where historic castle walls and cherry blossoms in varying shades of pink create a spring landscape unique to Matsumae.
One of the park's defining features is its succession of blooms, with different varieties flowering throughout the season. From early- to late-blooming trees, blossoms appear one after another, offering changing scenery with each visit. In the northern temple district, the over-300-year-old Kechimyaku-zakura cherry tree stands beside the stone walls of the Honmaru Gomon Gate as a symbol of the area's history. From higher ground, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the cherry blossoms and the Tsugaru Strait.
During the Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival, the park comes alive with traditional performing arts and other events. After sunset, illuminated cherry trees create a magical atmosphere as the castle and blossoms glow against the night sky. This enchanting scene offers one of Matsumae's most memorable spring experiences.
