Otaru Snow Light Path Festival
A Quiet Winter Night in Otaru, Glowing with Candlelight
Countless snow candles transform the historic streets of Otaru into a magical winter landscape, creating one of the city's most beloved seasonal traditions.
Named after Yuki Akari no Michi (Snow Light Path), a novel by Otaru author Sei Ito, this festival has been held since 1999. Each February, as temperatures fall below freezing, gentle candlelight illuminates the city, from the iconic Otaru Canal to the former Temiya railway line and Mt. Tengu.
About 200 glass fishing-float candles drift along the canal, inspired by the traditional floats once used by local fishermen. Their reflections shimmering on the water create one of the festival's most memorable sights. Along the former Temiya railway line, snow lanterns and snow slides add charm, while friendly exchanges with local and international volunteers create a welcoming atmosphere.
Visitors can also enjoy special food tasting tickets featuring sushi, Otaru sweets, and steaming hot noodles.
As you listen to the crunch of snow beneath your feet and admire the soft orange glow of candlelight in the crisp winter air, discover a heartwarming winter journey filled with beauty, tradition, and the flavors of Otaru.
