Spectacular open-air bath with swans dancing in the air

Lake Kussharo is Japan’s largest caldera lake. Formed over time due to volcanic activities, today, the lake is famous for its numerous hot springs. One of the most secluded in its vicinity is the Kotan Open-air Hot Spring. Situated surprisingly close to Lake Kussharo, bathing here allows for a fantastic view of the lake’s surrounding nature. In winter, the sight becomes even more spectacular when the swans gather on the lake. Soaking in the hot spring waters with a view of the winter landscape and swans is an experience you can’t have anywhere else! A large rock separates the bathing area and there are separate changing rooms for men and women. Because of the half-mixed setting, it’s also possible to bathe in a bathing suit or wrapped in a towel.

The hot spring is open for visitors every week on Tuesdays and Fridays from May to October, and every Friday from November to April.

Address: 川上郡弟子屈町屈斜路古丹

Access: A 20-minute taxi ride from Kawayuonsen on the JR Kushiro Main Line.

Popular Hot Springs near Sapporo

Jozankei is a popular Hot Springs district located in the suburbs of Sapporo City, known for the beauty of the surrounding nature. The views are fantastic in each season, and there are plenty of snow activities to enjoy in winter. Horse riding, dog sledding and snowshoeing are some of the best outdoor activities. You can also spend the day visiting shrines or just taking a walk through the beautiful natural landscapes.

A Hidden Hot Spring in a Fairytale Forest

Nestled deep within the forests of Hokkaido, Ginkonyu is a hidden hot spring known for its rich history and tranquil setting. The name “Ginkonyu” was inspired by the silver wedding anniversary of Emperor Taisho, when the spring first began to flow. Today, it’s a popular destination for couples preparing for marriage and those celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Located about 90 minutes by car from Hakodate, Ginkonyu offers easy access from popular tourist areas while immersing visitors in peaceful nature. The surrounding landscape showcases the beauty of all four seasons, with vibrant autumn foliage drawing particular acclaim. Soaking in the hot spring while gazing at colorful leaves is truly a magical experience.

The mineral-rich waters are believed to help relieve stress and fatigue, and are said to be beneficial for shoulder stiffness, lower back pain, and skin conditions. In addition to a spacious main bath that features free-flowing spring water, the ryokan also offers exclusive “hidden baths” for overnight guests. Along a forest trail, there are five secluded hot springs, each requiring a special key available at the front desk. Since the number of keys is limited, early check-in is highly recommended.

Address: 二海郡八雲町上ノ湯199

Access: After getting off at JR Hakodate Main Line’s Otoshibe Station, take Ginkonyu’s shuttle bus (About 15 minutes, advance reservation required)

The “Department Store” of Hot Springs

Noboribetsu Onsen is often referred to as the “Department Store of Hot Springs,” and it truly lives up to that name. Located in Hokkaido, this famous hot spring resort is known for offering 9 different types of mineral-rich hot spring waters, with a daily discharge of about 10,000 tons. Thanks to this incredible variety and abundance, it has been ranked as one of the top hot spring destinations in Japan by several travel magazines.

Nestled in a landscape of lush greenery and volcanic terrain, Noboribetsu Onsen is especially renowned for Jigokudani, or “Hell Valley.” This dramatic geothermal area is the main source of hot spring water for the nearby hotels and traditional inns. With steam vents, bubbling springs, and volcanic gases rising from the ground, the scene resembles a hellish yet captivating natural wonder.

One highly recommended spot is the Oyunuma River Natural Footbath, located just a short walk from the valley. While most natural hot springs are too hot for bathing, this shallow stream of warm spring water is perfect for soaking your feet while enjoying the surrounding forest. You’ll also find a charming hot spring town near Jigokudani, where you can stroll past local shops, sample traditional snacks, and enjoy a relaxing overnight stay.

Access:

- About 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport via Donan Bus “Express Noboribetsu Onsen Airport Line”

- About 15 minutes by bus from JR Noboribetsu Station

One of Japan’s Most Secluded Hot Springs

Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is a unique hot spring inn located on the shores of Lake Shikotsu, known as one of Hokkaido’s most secluded and scenic hot spring destinations. It’s easily accessible—about 60 minutes by bus from New Chitose Airport—and offers travelers the chance to immerse themselves in stunning natural surroundings.

One of the highlights of this ryokan is its natural open-air hot spring bath, which is connected directly to Lake Shikotsu. Because the hot spring water bubbles up naturally from the lakebed, the water level changes with the seasons, offering a completely different experience throughout the year. While day-use bathing is available, staying overnight is highly recommended to enjoy the ever-changing views at sunrise and sunset. Private reservable baths are also offered for a more intimate and relaxing soak.

Another special treat is the local delicacy—Himemasu (kokanee salmon), which you can enjoy grilled over an irori (traditional sunken hearth). Savoring freshly grilled fish by the fire makes for an unforgettable meal.

Address: 千歳市幌美内7

Access: A free shuttle bus operates from the Shikotsuko Bus Information Center to Marukoma Onsen Ryokan.
