Rising on the eastern edge of the Kameda Peninsula, Mt. Esan is an active volcano that still vents steam today. Trailheads begin at the crater plain parking area at 300 meters elevation, with several well-maintained routes to choose from, including the Summit Course (about 120 minutes round trip), Cape View Course (about 60 minutes), and Esan Observatory Course (about 80 minutes). As you hike, the scent of sulfur drifts on the breeze and the hiss of rising steam reminds you of the earth’s powerful energy below.

At the summit, a breathtaking 360‑degree panorama unfolds where sea and sky meet in every direction. Surrounded by ocean on three sides, the view stretches across the mountains of Hokkaido and the Muroran area, and on clear days reaches beyond the Tsugaru Strait to the Shimokita Peninsula. Along the Observatory Course, white plumes of steam surge from the reddish‑brown volcanic slopes, creating a striking contrast with the vast blue ocean.

In spring, the lower slopes bloom with pink and red azaleas, softening the rugged volcanic landscape with gentle color and fragrance. Just outside Hakodate, Mt. Esan offers a rare chance to experience the power of an active volcano, expansive coastal scenery, and seasonal beauty all in one place.
