Mt. Esan
Enjoy the Grand Panorama and Blooming Azaleas
Located at the eastern tip of the Kameda Peninsula, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, Mt. Esan is an active volcano standing 618 meters tall, surrounded on three sides by the sea.
Starting from the crater parking lot at an elevation of 300 meters, visitors can choose from multiple hiking trails. The Mt. Esan summit course takes about 120 minutes round trip and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Hokkaido’s mountains and the Shimokita Peninsula. Other scenic options include the Cape View Course (about 60 minutes round trip), where hikers can see areas such as Muroran, and the Esan Observatory Course (about 80 minutes round trip), which allows for close-up observation of rising volcanic smoke. With so many routes to explore, the mountain provides a rewarding experience each visit.
Since there are no shops along the trails, hikers are advised to come well-prepared. In spring, the area bursts into vibrant colors as azaleas bloom beautifully, earning Esan its reputation as the “Azalea Village.”
