Otaru City General Museum

Feel the Thundering Heartbeat of the Legendary Iron Horse

Otaru City General Museum is a must-visit landmark in Temiya, the birthplace of Hokkaido’s railway system. The spacious grounds showcase more than 50 historic railcars and offer a rare chance to experience an operating steam locomotive up close.

The museum stands on a former coal transport hub and is home to Locomotive Shed No. 3, built in 1885 and recognized as Japan’s oldest locomotive shed and a National Important Cultural Property. Inside its heavy brick walls, the faint scent of oil and gleaming black steel evoke the grandeur of the railway’s golden age. Outdoors, powerful vintage locomotives convey the strength that once carried trains across Hokkaido’s harsh northern landscape.

The highlight is the legendary “Iron Horse,” a steam locomotive built in the United States in 1909. As its whistle echoes over the port town of Otaru, visitors riding in the passenger cars can feel the rhythmic clatter and gentle vibrations of a bygone era—an unforgettable experience for all ages.

The museum also features a digital planetarium and interactive science exhibits, offering insights into Otaru’s history and technological heritage.

Note: Operating schedules vary by season; please check in advance to see the Iron Horse in motion.
