Located in Temiya, the birthplace of Hokkaido's railway, Otaru City General Museum features a National Important Cultural Property locomotive shed and around 50 historic railway vehicles.
The museum stands on a former coal transport hub and is home to Locomotive Shed No. 3, built in 1885 and preserved as the oldest surviving locomotive shed in Japan. This remarkable brick structure evokes the atmosphere of Hokkaido's pioneering railway era. Around 50 historic railway vehicles displayed across the grounds showcase the scale and character of early rail transport.
