Gaze upon the first light of dawn at the easternmost tip of Japan’s mainland, where rhythmic waves and a salty breeze awaken your senses.

Cape Nosappu offers a breathtaking coastal panorama where a historic white lighthouse stands above the deep blue Pacific Ocean, with views of the Northern Territories stretching across the horizon.

Located at the eastern edge of Nemuro, Cape Nosappu is known as one of the first places in Japan to greet the sun. At the tip of the cape stands Hokkaido’s oldest Western-style lighthouse, first lit in 1872. Its brilliant white silhouette contrasts beautifully with the vast blue sea. On clear days, the Kaigara Island Lighthouse and Suisho Island can be seen in the distance.

Standing on the cape, visitors can feel the strong sea breeze and hear waves crashing against the reefs below. The cries of seabirds add to the atmosphere of this dramatic coastal landscape. Nearby, in Cape Nokkeushi (Boukyou-no-Misaki) Park, the “Bridge of the Four Islands” monument symbolizes hope for the return of the Northern Territories, while the “Flame of Prayer,” brought from Okinawa, continues to burn.

At daybreak, the horizon glows crimson before the sun rises above the Pacific Ocean. Witnessing Japan’s earliest sunrise amid the sound of wind and waves is an unforgettable experience unique to Cape Nosappu.
