Formed in 1989 by the Jozankei Dam on the Otarunai River, Sapporo Lake is a stunning scenic spot where deep blue waters meet the surrounding mountain peaks. A scenic driving route winds along the lakeshore, featuring four well-maintained observation decks that offer unique perspectives of the landscape.

In spring, the lake is framed by the delicate greens of new buds, while summer brings lush, deep emerald forests reflected in the tranquil water. Autumn is particularly spectacular, as fiery red and orange foliage colors the entire lakeside. On calm days, the water becomes a perfect mirror, reflecting the sky and mountains. Visitors can immerse themselves in the quiet stillness, breathing in the fresh scent of the forest while taking in the awe-inspiring views.

At the Jozankei Dam Downstream Park, located directly below the dam, you can look up at the massive 117.5-meter-high structure to truly feel its immense scale. The Jozankei Dam Museum within the park provides insights into the dam’s history and water management. During the museum's opening periods, you can even venture inside the dam itself. Walking through the cool, hushed concrete corridors offers a unique, extraordinary adventure that lets you experience this engineering marvel from the inside out.
