Lake Sapporo

Feel the changing seasons in the backcountry of Sapporo!

Lake Sapporo was formed in 1989 (Heisei 1) by the Jozankei Dam, which dammed the Otarunai River.

The area upstream from the dam is part of a stunning scenic driving route that leads to Otaru City via Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort, Asari Pass, and Asarigawa Onsen. Along the road, there are four observation decks with parking areas, offering views of the deep blue lake along with the changing scenery of the four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, deep green mountains in summer, and vibrant foliage in autumn.

Below the dam, the "Jozankei Dam Downstream Park" has been developed, allowing visitors to view the massive dam from directly below. Within the park, there is also the "Jozankei Dam Museum," and during the museum's opening hours, it is possible to tour the inside of the dam structure.
