Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho
The legendary birthplace where Sapporo’s ramen culture began
Step into a narrow, nostalgic alley hidden within the neon glow of Susukino, where the rich aroma of simmering broth drifts through the air. Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho is more than a dining spot; it is a historic landmark that has preserved the city’s culinary heritage for over 70 years.
The story began in 1951 near the Sapporo Toho Koraku movie theater in Minami 5-jo Nishi 3-chome. Originally known as “Koraku Ramen Meitengai,” it started as a small row of eight shops. The remarkable success of one ramen shop, Rairaiken, inspired neighboring businesses to specialize in ramen, gradually transforming the entire street into a dedicated ramen district. Here, the foundations of what would become Sapporo’s signature ramen style were formed.
Although the original street was demolished in 1969 due to road expansion for the Sapporo Winter Olympics, its spirit was revived in 1971 at its current location. Today, the alley thrives as a vibrant culinary destination, where long-established shops preserving traditional recipes stand alongside innovative ones exploring modern interpretations. Whether classic miso ramen or contemporary creations, each bowl reflects Sapporo’s enduring passion for ramen.
