Lake Kutcharo & Summer Festival
Home to over 300 bird species at Japan's Northernmost Ramsar Site
Explore one of Hokkaido’s premier natural sanctuaries, where around 300 species of wild birds thrive in a rich and dynamic ecosystem.
This 30 km gourd-shaped lake, formed by Ohnuma and Konuma, is a true haven for birdlife. In spring and autumn, thousands of tundra swans gather gracefully on the water, creating a breathtaking seasonal spectacle. Feel the cool breeze and immerse yourself in the vitality of untouched nature.
With the Okhotsk Sea just 3 km away, the air is tinged with a unique brackish scent, while the rhythmic beating of wings adds to the tranquil atmosphere. At the Waterfowl Observatory, visitors can observe majestic Steller’s sea eagles and white-tailed eagles in their natural habitat within this shallow lake, averaging just 1.5 meters in depth.
In summer, the Lake Kutcharo Festival brings the area to life. The powerful rhythms of Hamatonbetsu Taiko and the savory aroma of freshly grilled local scallops fill the air. The celebration culminates in a spectacular fireworks display, with around 700 fireworks launched from the lake, brilliantly illuminating the night sky and its shimmering surface.
