Cape Tachimachi
A dramatic cliffside viewpoint overlooking the Tsugaru Strait
Cape Tachimachi lies on the southern side of Mt. Hakodate, jutting out into the Tsugaru Strait. Once used as a lookout for foreign vessels, it is now one of Hakodate’s most striking coastal viewpoints.
From a cliff about 30 meters above sea level, sweeping views of the Omori-hama coastline unfold below. On clear days, the vista extends across the strait to the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas of Aomori. From summer through autumn, the lights of squid fishing boats shimmer across the night sea, creating a magical and atmospheric scene.
In summer, Hamanasu Park comes alive with pink blooms of Rosa rugosa—Hokkaido’s symbolic flower—filling the air with a soft, pleasant fragrance. A seasonal shop, “Baiten Hamanasu,” also opens nearby, where visitors can try a local specialty: whelk.
The area is also rich in literary heritage. Monuments dedicated to the poet couple Yosano Hiroshi and Yosano Akiko stand nearby, and along the path to the cape lies the grave of poet Ishikawa Takuboku and his family.
