Jutting into the Tsugaru Strait on the south side of Mt. Hakodate, Cape Tachimachi is a historic landmark once used as a strategic lookout for foreign vessels. Standing on the sheer cliff about 30 meters above sea level, visitors can look down upon the beautiful Omori-hama coastline and hear the sound of waves crashing against the shore. On clear days, the sweeping panorama extends across the water to the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas in Aomori Prefecture.
Along the walking path stand monuments dedicated to poet couple Yosano Hiroshi and Yosano Akiko, as well as the grave of Ishikawa Takuboku and his family, offering a glimpse into Hakodate’s literary heritage. In early summer, Hamanasu (beach roses), Hokkaido’s official flower, bloom and fill the air with a soft fragrance. From summer through autumn, the night sea is illuminated by the magical glow of squid fishing boat lights.
