Otaru Aquarium, located in Otaru's Shukutsu district, exhibits about 250 species and 5,000 creatures as Hokkaido's largest aquarium. Inside the facility, creatures inhabiting northern seas, rivers, and lakes swim in tanks, and you can observe schools of colorful fish moving up close. Light filtering through the tanks sparkles on the water surface, and only the sound of flowing water echoes in the quiet interior.
The greatest highlight is the "Marine Animal Park," where animals are raised in a natural environment simply partitioned from the sea. Marine animals representing northern seas such as seals, sea lions, and walruses show their near-wild appearance, basking in the sun on rocky areas and diving dynamically into the sea. Sea lion roars reverberate, the scent of the tide drifts with the sound of splashing seawater. At dolphin and sea lion performances, water splashes reach the audience seats, and you can experience the powerful movements and breath of marine animals. You can enjoy different exhibition contents between regular operation and winter operation, making it an aquarium worth visiting in each season.
