Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center
Discover Japan’s Mysterious Marimo on a Lake Akan Island
Located on Churui Island in Lake Akan, this is the only facility in Japan where you can observe the rare "marimo" — a Special Natural Monument — up close in its breathtaking natural habitat.
Your adventure begins at the shores of Lake Akan. Board a sightseeing boat and feel the refreshing breeze as you glide across the crystal-clear blue water. The rhythmic sound of the waves and the panoramic views of the surrounding primeval forests and towering mountains set the stage for a truly magical experience.
Inside the center, large observation tanks faithfully recreate the lakebed of Lake Akan. Here, you can admire more than 150 marimo of all sizes, from tiny spheres to impressive specimens measuring over 20 cm in diameter. Watching these velvety green globes gently sway and slowly rotate in the sunlight is a captivating sight. The fine fibers on their surface shimmer under the water, creating an atmosphere that feels almost magical.
The center also serves as a vital hub for research, dedicated to the protection and cultivation of the declining marimo population. After learning about their unique ecology, head to the observation deck for a stunning reward. You will be greeted by a sweeping view of Lake Akan, framed by the majestic peaks of Mt. Meakan and Mt. Oakan. Surrounded by the cool lakeside air and the deep scent of the forest, you can enjoy a peaceful moment and gain a deeper appreciation for this rare natural treasure found nowhere else in the world.
