Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center
Facility protecting and researching over 150 Special Natural Monument specimens
The only exhibition and research facility in Japan where you can observe over 150 specimens of marimo (Special Natural Monument), located on Churui Island floating in Lake Akan.
Boarding a cruise ship from Lake Akan's shore, you head to the island while crossing the clear blue lake surface. The sound of the ship cutting through waves and the wind feel pleasant, with mountains covered in primeval forest stretching around. Inside the facility, in tanks faithfully recreating Lake Akan's lake bottom, you can closely observe over 150 marimo ranging from large ones exceeding 20cm diameter to small ones, swaying as green spheres. Marimo slowly rotating in clear water are mystical, with their surface's fine fibers glittering in the light.
The facility conducts research activities aimed at protecting and propagating declining marimo, which you can learn about. From the observation space, you can see Lake Akan's vast lake surface and the mountain ranges of Mount O-Akan and Mount Me-Akan surrounding the lake, with spectacular views of primeval forest's deep green and lake's blue. Enveloped in the cool lakeside air and forest scents, you can spend precious time unavailable elsewhere, deeply understanding the ecology of Special Natural Monuments.
