Discover Japan’s Mysterious Marimo on a Lake Akan Island

Located on Churui Island in Lake Akan, this is the only facility in Japan where you can observe the rare marimo—a Special Natural Monument—up close.

Your journey begins on the shores of Lake Akan. Board a sightseeing boat and feel the refreshing breeze as you glide across the crystal-clear water. The rhythmic sound of the waves and panoramic views of primeval forests and surrounding mountains create a memorable approach to the island.

Inside the center, large observation tanks faithfully recreate the lakebed of Lake Akan. More than 150 marimo of various sizes can be seen, from tiny spheres to impressive specimens over 20 cm in diameter. Watching these velvety green spheres gently sway and slowly rotate underwater is captivating, while the fine fibers on their surface shimmer in the light.

The center also conducts research focused on protecting and cultivating the declining marimo population. After learning about their unique ecology, head to the observation deck for sweeping views of Lake Akan, framed by the majestic peaks of Mt. Meakan and Mt. Oakan.
