A Mystical Emerald Gem Born from Lake Mashu
Hidden deep in the forest northeast of Lake Mashu, Kaminoko Pond—literally “Child of God Pond”—is a small yet enchanting spring-fed pool. It’s said to be nourished by underground water from Lake Mashu, giving rise to its divine name.
Measuring about 220 meters around and 5 meters deep, the pond releases an incredible 12,000 tons of water daily and never freezes, even in winter. Depending on sunlight and weather, its color shifts between emerald green and soft blue. The crystal-clear water reveals fallen trees resting undisturbed on the bottom, adding to its mysterious beauty.
Now part of Akan-Mashu National Park, Kaminoko Pond remains one of Hokkaido’s most photogenic and spiritually inspiring hidden gems.
