Kaminokoike Pond
A mystical blue pond fed by the underground springs of Lake Mashu
Known as “Kaminokoike Pond,” meaning “Child of the Gods,” this small, crystal-clear pond is said to be formed by underground springs flowing from Lake Mashu. With a circumference of 220 meters and a depth of 5 meters, it lies quietly hidden within the forest.
About 12,000 tons of fresh spring water flow into the pond each day, keeping it from freezing even in winter. The water remains at a constant temperature of around 8°C, and its clarity is astonishing—you can see fallen trees resting on the bottom and even fish swimming with striking detail. Depending on the light and viewing angle, the water shifts from emerald green to pale cobalt blue, creating a mesmerizing natural display.
Now part of Akan-Mashu National Park, the pond is surrounded by untouched primeval forest. When sunlight filters through the trees and touches the surface, the entire pond glows a brilliant blue—like a hidden jewel deep in the forest—offering visitors a truly otherworldly experience.
