Lake Mashu Third Observatory
The highest elevation among Lake Mashu observatories, with close views of Kamuy-shu Island
About 4km north of the First Observatory, this is the first observatory you encounter when heading to Lake Mashu from Kawayu Onsen.
From this location, the highest elevation among Lake Mashu's three observatories, you can capture Kamuy-shu Island floating on the lake surface right before your eyes. With few visitors and surrounded by the cool air and silence characteristic of high mountains, a luxurious time flows as if monopolizing the deep blue of Lake Mashu. When the wind blows through, only the faint sound of Erman's birch leaves swaying echoes.
Looking back from the observatory, the view suddenly opens up. Below spreads the vast water surface of Lake Kussharo, beyond it the distinctive form of Mt. Io, and further the ridgeline of Mt. Mokoto in a 360-degree panorama. At your feet, you can closely observe high-mountain trees like Erman's birch that endure harsh environments, strongly taking root.
