Lake Mashu
A mystical lake of world‑class clarity, cradled by dramatic cliffs
A sacred caldera lake known as the “Lake of the Gods,” celebrated for its serene “Mashu Blue” waters often wrapped in ethereal mist.
Known as “Kamui-to” (Lake of the Gods) by the Ainu people, Lake Mashu is a breathtaking natural wonder held within a massive basin with a maximum depth of 212m. This mysterious lake maintains a remarkably constant water level despite having no rivers flowing in or out. On calm days, its surface transforms into a perfect mirror, reflecting the sky in a deep, soul‑stirring shade known as “Mashu Blue.”
The lake is enclosed by steep caldera walls rising 150m to 350m, creating a sacred atmosphere untouched by the outside world. From June to July, cool, moist breezes often bring layers of white mist that drift across the water—an iconic scene celebrated in local lore. Visitors can admire the rugged landscape of Mt. Mashu (Kamuinupuri) and the small island Kamuishu from three distinct viewpoints: No. 1, No. 3, and Ura‑Mashu observatories.
