This is what the World Natural Heritage Site, "Shiretoko," is about

Shiretoko is a peninsula with a range of mountains more than 1,000 meters high in the center of the peninsula, and still retains a pristine wilderness. The high-quality nutrients from the drift ice enrich the sea and nurture an ecosystem that extends from the sea to the land. On land, there are brown bears and Ezo sika deer; in the sea, whales and orcas. White-tailed eagles soar in the sky, and you can still see wild animals living in their natural habitat.

The grandeur of nature can be experienced in a variety of ways. If this is your first visit, a walk around the Shiretoko Five Lakes or a cruise on the Shiretoko Peninsula is recommended. The Shiretoko Five Lakes, with the Shiretoko mountain range reflected in the clear blue surface of the lakes, is one of the eight scenic views of Shiretoko. The Shiretoko eight scenic views also include the Kamuiwakka Hot Falls and the Shiretoko Pass, which can be visited by trekking or on a cruise. This is the standard way to enjoy Shiretoko. Shiretoko Peninsula cruises sail along the coastline to the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula, which cannot be reached by land. You can enjoy spectacular views of the Shiretoko mountain range, rugged sea cliffs, and majestic waterfalls cascading down from rock walls into the Sea of Okhotsk. You can also enjoy watching wild brown bears from the sea.

Nature cruises are also popular in Rausu, on the eastern side of the Shiretoko Peninsula. In summer, visitors can go whale watching, and in winter, Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed sea eagles can be seen. You can see orcas, whales, dolphins, and a wide variety of other wild animals.

You can also taste the delicacies of the Sea of Okhotsk. You can enjoy salmon and other local fish caught in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of Shiretoko.

Taushubetsu River Bridge
Numerous railroad bridges remain along the former Japan National Railways (JNR) Shihoro Line, which has been closed down. The most famous of these is the Taushubetsu River Bridge over Lake Nukabira. It is called the "phantom bridge" because it appears and disappears depending on the water level. The bridge is fully visible from March to May, when the water level is almost zero. From June, when the water level rises due to melting snow and the bridge is reflected on the lake surface, a beautiful circular arch appears. In summer and fall, the bridge sinks back to the bottom of the lake. This is the only arch bridge in Japan that changes its appearance depending on the season. If you join a guided tour, you can see the beautiful bridge up close, which is reminiscent of the ancient ruins of Rome.
