Uramashu Observatory

Experience the serene beauty of Lake Mashu and Mt. Kamui-nupuri up close

A hidden viewpoint with clear skies and a mystical view of Lake Mashu.

Uramashu Observatory sits at an elevation of 585 meters, offering one of the clearest views of Lake Mashu. Unlike the popular spots on the opposite side, this location is less prone to fog, allowing you to fully appreciate the lake’s deep blue surface and remarkable transparency. Surrounded by lush forests of broadleaf and conifer trees, the scenery reflects beautifully on the water, creating a tranquil atmosphere far from the crowds.

To the left, Mt. Kamui-nupuri—meaning “God’s Mountain”—dominates the horizon, telling the story of the lake’s origin. Formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 7,000 years ago, Lake Mashu is a caldera lake spanning approximately 7.5 kilometers in diameter. At its center lies Kamui-shu Island, a lava dome that plunges 211 meters below the surface. Here, you can immerse yourself in nature’s silence, breathe in the fresh forest air, and listen to the gentle whisper of the wind—a truly unique experience found only at Uramashu Observatory.
