Genseikaen Ayamegahara & Akkeshi Ayame Festival

A purple ocean by the sea

About 300,000 hiougi irises bloom in full glory at this breathtaking scenic spot, where a vast 100-hectare flower garden stretches across cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Located along the North Pacific Seaside Line, also known as the "Mist Road of Capes and Flowers," Genseikaen Ayamegahara is a natural treasure. From mid-June to early July, this 100-hectare grassland atop 100-meter-high cliffs is transformed into a vibrant purple landscape as the hiougi irises (Arctic irises) reach their peak.

The journey begins with a walk through a mystical forest of twisted Erman's birch trees, often called "dancing trees of the wilderness." As you emerge from the woods, the refreshing sea breeze carries the noble, delicate scent of wildflowers. While the irises are the stars of the season, more than 100 species of coastal and alpine plants can be observed here from May to October. From the observation deck, you can take in the dramatic sight of jagged cliffs carved by the rough waves, the serene presence of Daikoku Island floating in the Pacific, and the soothing rhythm of the tide—a truly ethereal experience that calms the soul.
