Cape Kiritappu
A dramatic coastal cape where wild sea otters and a lighthouse overlook the Pacific
Located at the eastern tip of Hamanaka, Cape Kiritappu juts out into the Pacific Ocean, revealing a rugged landscape of sheer cliffs and rocky reefs. Officially known as Toufutsu Cape, it is also called “Tokkari Cape,” named after the seals (tokkari) often seen along its shores, and is cherished by locals.
Rising 40 to 60 meters above sea level, the cape offers sweeping views across the open ocean. Highlights include Hokake Rock, where seals gather, as well as the dramatic cliffs of Ponporoto and Mouraito, and the expansive waters of Hamanaka Bay. At the tip stands the Toufutsu Cape Lighthouse, recognized in 2016 as Hokkaido’s first “Lighthouse of Romance” — a perfect setting for sharing a memorable moment.
In recent years, wild sea otters have also made this area their home. More than a dozen individuals have been observed, including playful parent-and-pup pairs drifting gently among the kelp.
The area is equipped with public restrooms, and a nearby campground offers bungalows and cooking facilities for those wishing to stay overnight. As day turns to night, the sound of waves and a sky filled with stars create a peaceful, unforgettable atmosphere unique to this remote cape.
