Ningle Terrace

An Enchanted Craft Village in the Forest of Furano

Tucked away in the forests of Furano, Hokkaido, Ningle Terrace is a charming craft village where about 15 cozy log cabins are scattered among the trees. Connected by wooden boardwalks, the village feels like a scene from a fairy tale.

The name “Ningle” comes from the stories of renowned Japanese screenwriter Kuramoto So. In his tales, Ningles are tiny forest dwellers—about 15 centimeters (6 inches) tall—known as the “wise people of the woods.” Their spirit of living in harmony with nature seems to linger quietly in this peaceful forest setting.

As you stroll along the wooden paths, you may hear the gentle creak of the boards beneath your feet and catch the refreshing scent of pine in the air. Each cabin offers a different kind of craftsmanship, from delicate silver jewelry to finely carved wooden pieces and handmade leather goods. At the Forest Candle Shop, visitors can find candle-shaped wooden crafts carved from local Furano timber, while Furano Silver Craft & Snow Crystals features snowflake charms crafted from pure silver.

Some cabins allow you to watch artisans at work, where the soft rhythm of stitching leather and carving wood echoes quietly through the forest.

In winter, snow-covered roofs and warm evening lights transform the village into a glowing wonderland. After exploring, stop by the nearby café Mori no Tokei, known as the filming location for the TV drama Yasashii Jikan. Here you can grind your own coffee beans and relax while gazing out at the tranquil forest.
