Omagari Lakeside Garden
Hokkaido’s Rare Double-Blooming Sunflower Paradise
Once a prison farm, this vast sunflower field in Abashiri has been transformed into a stunning seasonal attraction. With blooms in both summer and autumn, it offers the rare chance to enjoy sweeping fields of gold twice a year.
Spanning an area roughly the size of four Tokyo Domes, the garden unfolds in brilliant shades of yellow. From the wooden observation deck, you’re greeted by a sweeping view of sunflowers stretching to the horizon. As you walk along the unpaved paths, the soft texture underfoot and the gentle movement of flowers in the breeze create a calm, open atmosphere.
What makes this garden unique is its two blooming seasons—a rarity in Japan. Around 750,000 flowers bloom from early to mid-July, followed by a second peak from late September to early October, when up to 2.6 million sunflowers reach full bloom.
In autumn, sunflowers are joined by delicate pink and white cosmos, adding contrast to the landscape. Whether under the summer sun or in the crisp autumn air, each visit reveals a different side of Hokkaido’s seasonal beauty.
