Originally built as the residence of a wealthy herring-fishing magnate, this historic ryokan offers panoramic views of Ishikari Bay, elegant architecture designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, and the soothing waters of its own natural hot spring.

Perched on Cape Hiraiso in Otaru, Ginrinsou was built in 1900 by Inomata Yasunojo, a successful herring fishing entrepreneur from Yoichi. Relocated to its present site in 1938, the main building and Grill Ginrinsou were designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan in 2023. Designed by master carpenter Yoneyama Senzo of Echigo, the building showcases fine timber craftsmanship that reflects the prosperity of Hokkaido's herring fishing era.

Ginrinsou is also home to Hiraiso Hot Spring, fed by a private source rising from about 1,300 meters underground. Its mineral-rich waters are known for keeping the body warm long after bathing. The open-air rock bath overlooks Ishikari Bay, where sea breezes, seabirds, and the distant sounds of trains and ships create Otaru's distinctive atmosphere. As one of the few remaining herring mansions in Hokkaido offering overnight stays, Ginrinsou offers a unique opportunity to experience the region's history, architecture, and hot spring culture.
