Icebreaker Garinko

A Powerful Journey Through the Drift Ice

Experience the power of nature aboard the Garinko, Monbetsu’s iconic icebreaker. Feel the vibration beneath your feet and hear the deep sound of crushing ice as you travel through the winter landscape of the Sea of Okhotsk.

At the bow, two massive Archimedes screws grind through the drift ice, pushing the ship forward with impressive force. Step onto the deck and feel the crisp winter air, the deep rumble of breaking ice, and the powerful vibrations beneath your feet. Chunks of ice rising from below may sometimes appear in a mysterious emerald hue, offering a unique sight from the ship.

With a history dating back to its designation as a Hokkaido Heritage in 2004, the Garinko now operates as the Garinko III IMERU. The 366-ton vessel features climate-controlled cabins and large windows, allowing passengers to enjoy spectacular views of the drift ice in comfort. If you are lucky, you may spot Steller’s sea eagles, a designated Natural Monument of Japan, resting on the ice, or even seals swimming among the floes.

As the ship leaves a powerful wake across the white expanse, experience the immense scale and beauty of the winter Sea of Okhotsk aboard the Garinko.
