Former Iwafune Family Garden (Kousetsuen) & Hakodate MOMI-G Festa
Step into Hokkaido’s Only Nationally Designated Cultural Garden
Discover a serene escape where history blends seamlessly with nature. At Kousetsuen, the changing seasons come alive through elegant architecture and a stunning 100-meter maple-lined avenue that glows beneath the autumn night sky.
Nestled on a quiet hill within Miharashi Park, the Former Iwafune Family Garden—commonly known as Kousetsuen—is a sprawling landscape garden originally created in the 1890s as a villa for the wealthy Iwafune family. Covering about 13.3 hectares, it is the only garden in Hokkaido designated as a National Cultural Property. As you wander through the grounds, you’ll discover a unique harmony of East and West, with a grand brick greenhouse alongside a traditional Japanese-style pavilion designed for tea ceremonies.
In autumn, the garden transforms into a vibrant display of color as around 150 species of trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold. The highlight is the 100-meter maple avenue, where the crisp air carries the scent of fallen leaves and the canopy forms a glowing tunnel of crimson.
From late October, the Hakodate MOMI-G Festa brings a magical atmosphere to the evenings. As night falls, the garden is gently illuminated, casting a soft glow over the swaying leaves. The scene takes on a dreamlike quality—offering a tranquil, almost unreal experience that feels worlds apart from the daytime landscape.
