On clear days, views extend beyond Hakodate city to the Tsugaru Strait and as far as the Shimokita Peninsula.
The observation floor also offers a journey through history at the Goryokaku Historical Gallery. Scale models and dioramas vividly recreate the fortress at the time of its construction, while exhibits trace the key events of the Battle of Hakodate. A notable highlight is the bronze statue of Hijikata Toshizo, vice-commander of the Shinsengumi.
