Sightseeing in Hakodate

There are many spots in Hakodate where you can enjoy its rich history, such as the Special Historic Site, Goryokaku Fort, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses, and the Former British Consulate of Hakodate. Local gourmet options, like specialty burgers, are also abundant. One day might not be enough to experience it all!

About 15 minutes by car

Mt. Hakodate

A Michelin Three-Star Panorama Where City Lights Meet the Sea

Discover the breathtaking beauty of Mt. Hakodate, a 334-meter peak offering a world-class night view and a lush natural sanctuary recognized by the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

From the summit observation deck, you can witness a truly unique geographic spectacle: a vibrant cityscape cradled within a narrow neck of land between Hakodate Bay and the Tsugaru Strait. During the day, the vivid contrast between the deep blue sea and the lush mountain greenery creates a refreshing coastal portrait.

As twilight fades, the city transforms into a shimmering jewelry box. Countless lights sparkle against the ink-black sea, creating a magical boundary that seems to float on the water. While standing at the lookout, breathe in the crisp, refreshing breeze and let the gentle scent of the salt air tell the story of this historic port city.

Beyond its famous skyline, Mt. Hakodate is a haven for biodiversity. Because it was once used as a military fortress and remained off-limits for many years, its primeval nature has been beautifully preserved. Often called "Gaguyama" (Mt. Reclining Cow) for its distinctive shape, the mountain is home to about 600 species of plants and 150 types of wild birds.

Wander through the peaceful hiking trails, where a 1-hour trek allows you to immerse yourself in the seasonal colors of Hokkaido’s flora. Listen to the delicate chorus of wild birds and feel the pulse of life within this protected wildlife area, designated in 1964. Whether you are seeking a romantic evening or a serene morning walk, Mt. Hakodate offers a profound connection to both history and nature.

[Accommodation] Yunokawa Hot Spring

A Historic Hot Spring in Hakodate That Once Healed a Matsumae Lord

Yunokawa Hot Spring, one of Hokkaido’s three major onsen resorts, is a historic onsen in Hakodate cherished for its long-standing reputation. Steeped in history, local legend recounts how the therapeutic waters once healed a seriously ill Matsumae Clan feudal lord, cementing its status as a cherished sanctuary.

Conveniently located about 10 minutes by car from Hakodate Airport and near downtown Hakodate, it serves as an ideal base for exploring the city. The hot spring area features numerous ryokan and hotels offering fresh Hokkaido seafood and seasonal delicacies. A must-try is relaxing in the open-air baths (rotenburo), which offer stunning, panoramic views of the Tsugaru Strait.

From June through December, keep an eye out for the shimmering lights of squid fishing boats (Isaribi) illuminating the night sea—a truly magical spectacle unique to Hakodate. In addition, the free foot baths in the district provide a casual and relaxing experience where both locals and travelers can enjoy a peaceful moment during sightseeing.

At Yunokawa Hot Spring, you can enjoy history, breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and soothing waters—all in one place. Make Yunokawa Onsen the restorative centerpiece of your Hokkaido adventure.

Hakodate Morning Market

A Seafood Wonderland! Savor Every Flavor of Hakodate Just Steps from the Station

Located about a 1-minute walk from Hakodate Station, this vibrant market features about 250 shops where you can enjoy fresh squid and seafood bowls.

If you want to feel the true pulse of Hakodate, head straight to the Ekini Market. The highlight here is the "Katsu-ika Tsuribori" (Live Squid Fishing Pond). You can catch transparent squid swimming vigorously in the tank yourself. The heavy tug on the line the moment you catch one and the splashing water create a thrilling, hands-on experience. A skilled chef prepares your catch as sashimi right before your eyes. The beautifully sliced squid, with its firm edges, offers a unique crunchy texture and a rich sweetness that fills your mouth. Enjoy the bounties of the sea accompanied by the energetic shouts of market vendors echoing through the air.

The history of the morning market dates back to 1945, just after the end of World War II, when local farmers began selling vegetables. Today, the vast 3-hectare site gathers Hokkaido's seasonal delights, ranging from seafood like crab and salmon to fruit sold directly from farms. As you walk through the stalls, the briny scent of the ocean drifts through the air. In the crisp, early morning air, why not deeply immerse yourself in the vibrant food culture of Hakodate?

Tobetsu Trappist Monastery

Japan’s First Catholic Monastery for Men

Founded in 1896, Trappist Monastery has a history spanning nearly 130 years.

A peaceful, tree-lined avenue guides visitors toward the monastery for about 200 meters. Towering Japanese cedars and poplars rise overhead, while soft sunlight filters through the leaves. As you walk along the path, the only sound you’ll hear is the gentle rustling of branches—an experience that quietly draws you away from the noise of everyday life.

The monastery grounds are filled with a serene, sacred atmosphere shaped by a life devoted to prayer and work.

At the on-site shop, visitors can find cookies, cultured butter, and butter candies carefully made by the monks. A must-try is the monastery’s signature soft-serve ice cream, made with rich Trappist butter, offering a smooth, creamy texture and a delicate, lingering flavor.

About a 20-minute walk behind the monastery lies the Lourdes Grotto. On clear days, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and even the distant Tsugaru Peninsula.

As this is a monastery for men, the interior is not open to women. However, visitors can still enjoy peaceful scenery along the tree-lined paths and surrounding walking trails, while experiencing the monastery’s tranquil atmosphere throughout the seasons.
