Goryokaku Park & Hakodate Goryokaku Festival

Step into Japan’s history amid cherry blossoms and a star-shaped fortress

Designated as a National Special Historic Site, the Goryokaku Ruins are a rare Western-style fortress in Japan, famous for their distinctive star-shaped design. Today, the site has been transformed into Goryokaku Park, one of Hokkaido’s most celebrated cherry blossom destinations.

In spring, around 1,500 cherry trees burst into bloom across the park, creating breathtaking scenery that attracts visitors from across the region. One of the park’s highlights is enjoying the blossoms from the moat aboard a small rowing boat. After sunset, the illuminated cherry trees create a magical nighttime atmosphere. Beyond cherry blossom season, the park offers seasonal beauty throughout the year, with blooming flowers, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene winter landscapes.

Within the park stands the restored Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, once an administrative center of the Edo shogunate. The recreated interiors, along with historical exhibits and videos, provide insight into the dramatic events surrounding Goryokaku and the final days of the Tokugawa era.

Rising beside the park, the Goryokaku Tower offers a panoramic view of the star-shaped fortress, the city of Hakodate, and even the Tsugaru Strait on clear days. Viewing the park from above before exploring on foot adds depth to the experience.

Each May, the Hakodate Goryokaku Festival brings history to life through reenactments and performances inspired by the late Edo period, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into Hakodate’s past.
