Ubagami Daijingu Togyosai Festival
One of Hokkaido's premier festivals with 380 years of history and tradition
Thirteen gorgeously decorated floats (yama) parade through the town, enveloping Esashi in the lively atmosphere of the Edo period.
Hokkaido's oldest festival, said to have originated from giving thanks to the gods for bountiful herring catches. The schedule is set annually: August 9th for the Yoimiya Festival and Mitamashiro Hosen Festival, the 10th for the Main Festival (lower town procession), and the 11th for the Main Festival (upper town procession). The sight of gorgeously decorated floats gathering together while festival music in the style of Kyoto's Gion Festival plays is truly spectacular. On the final night, when floats successively gather in the Shinmachi entertainment district, the festival reaches its climax with pullers and spectators becoming one.
