Kamome Island, designated as a special zone of Hiyama Prefectural Natural Park, is a symbol of Esashi Town shaped like a seagull with spread wings when viewed from above.
At the island's entrance stands a full-scale replica of the Kaiyo Maru, which ran aground and sank off Esashi in 1868, conveying the history of the late Edo period to this day. Walking along the promenade from the inland coast to the center of the island, the sea breeze caresses your cheeks and the sound of waves resonates pleasantly in your ears. Along the way, you'll encounter the "Heishiiwa" (Bottle Rock), a vertically towering rock over 10 meters high, whose presence is overwhelming. Further ahead, you'll find the "Sunset Observation Lighthouse" and the "Bell of Happiness," where couples and families ring the bell as they wish, filling the island with its sound.
The sunset view from the heights is a spectacular scene selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Sunsets. The sight of the horizon dyed orange and the silhouettes of oddly shaped rocks creates a breathtaking beauty. In summer, a beach opens and you can enjoy marine camping experiences. Surrounded by the scent of the tide and the sound of waves, you can spend special time on this island where history and nature coexist.
