Esashi Oiwake Kaikan, Esashi Yama Kaikan
Hear the Soul of Hokkaido’s Seafaring Past
Esashi Oiwake Kaikan
In Esashi, a historic port town in southern Hokkaido, the Kaikan showcases the region’s famous folk song, Esashi Oiwake, born from melodies sung by Edo period (1603–1868) merchant sailors and herring fishermen. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the song’s profound lyrics and heritage. Crucially, the hall offers live performances of Esashi Oiwake from late April to October, usually three times a day. This is the best way to hear the melancholic, soulful melody firsthand. Hands-on singing lessons are also available.
Esashi Yama Kaikan
Home to Hokkaido’s oldest festival (370 years), the Ubagami Daijingu Togyo Festival runs from August 9 to 11. This spectacular event features 13 magnificent, multi-tiered floats (called yama), built by wealthy merchants and reflecting cultural influences from Kyoto and Edo. At the Yama Kaikan, visitors can see two of these exquisitely decorated yama displayed on rotation. Large screen footage allows you to experience the festival's exhilarating atmosphere, even outside the August dates.
Located adjacent to each other, these two halls offer a vivid, integrated glimpse into Hokkaido's deep-rooted culture. Step away from the major cities and immerse yourself in the authentic history and soul of Esashi.

Teuchi Soba Nagomi
A Taste of Tradition with Carefully Prepared Sweet-Simmered Herring
If you're looking to warm both your heart and your stomach during your visit to Hokkaido, stop by Teuchi Soba Nagomi, a local gem in Esashi known for its specialty Nishin Soba (herring soba), a beloved traditional dish in the region.
The herring is simmered for 5 days, then aged for about another 7 days to bring out its deep umami flavor. This sweet-simmered herring, crafted with great care, is the pride of the chef. The soba noodles are handmade with a classic nihachi (80% buckwheat) blend, and the soup broth contains no artificial additives—only carefully selected domestic and Hokkaido-sourced ingredients.
The pairing of savory, tender herring with fragrant handmade soba is a satisfying experience that highlights the spirit of local cuisine.

Kamome-jima Island
An island in the Sunset of Japan 100 Best, where the Kaiyo Maru rests since 1868
Kamome Island, designated as a special zone of Hiyama Prefectural Natural Park, is a symbol of Esashi Town shaped like a seagull with spread wings when viewed from above.
At the island's entrance stands a full-scale replica of the Kaiyo Maru, which ran aground and sank off Esashi in 1868, conveying the history of the late Edo period to this day. Walking along the promenade from the inland coast to the center of the island, the sea breeze caresses your cheeks and the sound of waves resonates pleasantly in your ears. Along the way, you'll encounter the "Heishiiwa" (Bottle Rock), a vertically towering rock over 10 meters high, whose presence is overwhelming. Further ahead, you'll find the "Sunset Observation Lighthouse" and the "Bell of Happiness," where couples and families ring the bell as they wish, filling the island with its sound.
The sunset view from the heights is a spectacular scene selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Sunsets. The sight of the horizon dyed orange and the silhouettes of oddly shaped rocks creates a breathtaking beauty. In summer, a beach opens and you can enjoy marine camping experiences. Surrounded by the scent of the tide and the sound of waves, you can spend special time on this island where history and nature coexist.
