Sapporo White Illumination, Japan's first winter light festival, transforms the city's winter nights into a breathtaking spectacle. In the crisp air, colorful lights create a magical landscape across the city center. The main venue at Odori Park features iconic illuminated installations, while Ekimae-dori Street, stretching 1.5 kilometers from JR Sapporo Station to Susukino, becomes a brilliant corridor of light with about 220,000 LEDs.
Each venue offers its own charm and creative displays. Along Minami 1-jo dori, rows of trees glow brightly, while the Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza features dynamic programs blending music and light. At the Akapla venue, visitors can enjoy the "City Aurora" light installation against the historic backdrop of the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building.
The festival also incorporates environmentally friendly initiatives. Some displays at the Odori venue use biodiesel fuel made from collected waste cooking oil. Stroll through this sea of light, listening to the snow crunch beneath your feet, and experience a uniquely Sapporo winter evening.
