Located on Kitaichijo-dori Avenue in central Sapporo, Kitakaro Sapporo Main Store is the flagship store of one of Hokkaido’s leading confectionery brands. The store occupies the former Hokkaido Prefectural Library, built in 1926 as Hokkaido’s first full-scale public library.
Renovated in 2016 under the design of renowned architect Ando Tadao, the historic building retains its grand entrance hall and original architectural details, blending historic charm with contemporary design.
The first floor features signature treats, Sapporo Main Store exclusives, and a gallery showcasing works by Sapporo-born painter Kotaro Migishi. Upstairs, a spacious café serves cake sets and Western-style dishes, while floor-to-ceiling bookshelves holding around 6,000 books recall the building’s past as a library.
Visitors can also order popular Baumkuchen with custom-branded messages, making them ideal souvenirs or special gifts. Combining historic architecture with Hokkaido sweets, Kitakaro Sapporo Main Store offers a distinctive Sapporo experience.
