Odori Park

A lush Sapporo oasis of seasonal blooms and culture

A 1.5-kilometer urban park in central Sapporo, offering a serene escape with nature and iconic local events.

Originally established in 1871 as a firebreak, Odori Park is now a beloved retreat for locals and travelers alike. It features about 4,700 trees across 90 species, framed by vibrant seasonal flowers. The park also hosts Hokkaido’s major celebrations, including the YOSAKOI Soran Festival, the romantic White Illumination, and the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival.

The park is divided into five themed zones. The International Exchange Zone (Nishi 1-chome and 2-chome) features the Sapporo TV Tower and the Benson Water Fountain, a gift from sister city Portland. Moving west, the Water and Light Zone (Nishi 3-chome to 5-chome) captivates visitors with large fountains and beautiful evening illuminations.

Families enjoy the Celebration Zone (Nishi 6-chome to 9-chome), home to Isamu Noguchi’s "Black Slide Mantra." The Frontier Zone (Nishi 10-chome and 11-chome) showcases pioneer statues and the 25-meter-high Maibaum from Munich. Finally, the Sunken Garden Zone (Nishi 12-chome) offers a fragrant rose garden and the historic Sapporo City Archive Museum, built in 1926.

A highlight from late April to early October is the "Tokibi Wagon." The savory aroma of grilled Hokkaido corn fills the air, providing a delicious taste of the region’s harvest as you stroll through this urban sanctuary.
