Sapporo Lilac Festival

Purple and White Lilacs, Wine, and Music. Experience the Fragrant Magic of Sapporo’s Early Summer

A historic festival held since 1959. Experience blooming lilacs, local cuisine, and culture in the heart of Sapporo.

The Sapporo Lilac Festival began in 1959, inspired by a vision to host “a high-culture event when the lilacs are in full bloom.” In 1960, the lilac was officially designated as Sapporo’s city tree. Today, the festival is cherished by locals as a beloved sign of the end of the long winter and a vibrant celebration welcoming the outdoor season.

At the main venue, Odori Park, about 400 purple and white lilacs burst into bloom, filling the air with a sweet, delicate fragrance. Music performances and tea ceremonies add to the festive atmosphere, while the popular Wine Garden invites you to savor Hokkaido wines and local cuisine surrounded by colorful blossoms.

The celebration also extends to Kawashimo Park, where you can join guided tours through the Lilac Forest, home to more than 200 varieties of lilacs that bloom in succession. Feel the fresh breeze and the gentle scent of flowers while enjoying music and the rich flavors of Hokkaido. Discover a peaceful, uniquely Sapporo moment at this iconic early-summer event.
