Tengu Fire-Walking Shrine Festival (Kotohira Shrine Grand Festival)
Witness the Spectacular Tengu Fire-Walking Ritual
Located in Furubira Town, the Kotohira Shrine Grand Festival is one of the area's most celebrated summer events, attracting nearly 1,000 spectators each year.
In this sacred ritual, Sarutahiko, represented by a Tengu wearing a vermilion robe and a distinctive long-nosed mask, leads a procession with the festival's sacred object through the streets. As the powerful beat of taiko drums and the sound of flutes echo through the town, the atmosphere builds toward a dramatic climax.
The breathtaking highlight comes when the Tengu boldly walks through towering pillars of fire reaching nearly three meters high. Kicking aside the flying sparks, he advances with dignified resolve, filling the venue with palpable tension. Following the Tengu, shishimai (lion dancers) and mikoshi (portable shrines) also pass through the glowing embers as cheers from the crowd echo beneath the summer night sky. This special summer event offers visitors a chance to experience firsthand the sacred traditions and prayers preserved by the people of Furubira.
