A scenic spot in the Cape Shakotan area at Shimamuikigan Coast, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Shores, overlooking the sea of Shakotan Blue with outstanding transparency.
From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the vivid blue sea called Shakotan Blue spreading below, and catch your breath at the transparency that allows you to see clearly to the bedrock. The beautiful contrast between dynamic rocky areas and the blue sea, sea breezes blow through, and the scent of the tide drifts heavily. The sound of waves hitting rocks echoes endlessly, and seabird cries reverberate in the sky. Proceeding along the nature promenade called Shirara Path, Joroko Rock appears, looking like a woman standing toward the offing. A sad legend is passed down about this strange rock, and its mysterious appearance fascinates visitors.
In early summer, yellow Ezo daylilies bloom on the cliffs, and the contrast between the blue sea and yellow flowers is vivid. This is a spectacular spot representing the Shakotan Peninsula, woven by sea transparency, unique rocky landscape, and the legend of Joroko Rock. The official recognition as one of Japan's Top 100 Shores and the unique sea color of Shakotan Blue continue to attract many tourists.
