Historical Village of Hokkaido “Kaitaku no mura”

Step back in time to the pioneering era! Experience history at this sprawling open-air museum.

Nestled within the lush greenery of Nopporo Forest Park, Historical Village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum that relocates and faithfully restores over fifty buildings from across Hokkaido, dating from the Meiji to early Showa periods. Founded in 1983 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido’s development, this 54.2-hectare site is divided into four distinct zones—Town, Fishing Village, Farming Village, and Mountain Village—where 52 historical structures stand in their original form.

Each area recreates the flavor of its era, so wandering the streets truly feels like traveling back to pioneering Hokkaido. Not only are the exteriors preserved, but many interiors are furnished to reflect daily life of the time, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of early settlers. To cover more ground, enjoy a ride on the horse-drawn tramway in summer or the horse-drawn sleigh in winter—the views from the carriage are unforgettable.

At the Learning Workshop, hands-on “Traditional Toy Making” sessions are offered regularly and are great fun for children. You can not only craft toys but also play with them, and seasonal festivals and events throughout the year bring historical traditions vividly to life.

When you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the grounds, relax at the Pioneer Village Café. Don’t miss the local favorite “imo-mochi” (potato cakes), or opt for the hearty “Tondenhei Set Meal,” featuring miso oden and pork miso soup—both beloved by visitors.
