Shizunai Nijukken Road Cherry Blossoms & Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival

A breathtaking tunnel of pink stretching toward the horizon in Shinhidaka Town

Experience one of Japan's most spectacular spring sights: a 7km straight path lined with over 2,000 cherry trees in full bloom.

The Nijukken Road was originally developed as a ceremonial route for the Imperial Family to visit the nearby Niikappu Imperial Pasture. Beginning in 1916, cherry trees—including Ezo-yamazakura—were brought from surrounding mountains and carefully planted over the course of three years. The road earned its name from its width of "Nijukken" (about 36m), a traditional Japanese measurement. Today, this landmark is celebrated as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan," one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites," and a designated Hokkaido Heritage site. Each year in early May, the avenue draws around 100,000 visitors eager to witness its spectacular bloom.

As the trees reach their peak, a magnificent canopy of pale pink petals unfolds overhead, seemingly without end. Walking along the path, the delicate fragrance of blossoms fills the air while a refreshing breeze brushes your cheeks. Surrounded by the gentle rustle of leaves, you will feel the true arrival of spring in Hokkaido. The Cherry Blossom Festival also offers a chance to savor seasonal local flavors and shop for limited-edition souvenirs, making it the perfect event to fully enjoy spring in Shinhidaka Town.
