Ishiyama Green Space

Where Art and Nature Meet in a Former Quarry

Ishiyama Green Space (officially known as Ishiyama Open Space) is a unique park created from the former quarry of “Sapporo soft stone,” a material that played a vital role in constructing historic buildings throughout the city.

Once a working quarry known for its fire-resistant and insulating properties, the site has been transformed into a space where dramatic landscapes and contemporary art blend seamlessly. Visitors can stroll through the grounds, surrounded by exposed stone walls and the refreshing breeze of the surrounding white birch forest.

The park features large-scale installation art by the sculpture collective CINQ, including the “Negative Mound,” inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, and “Gogo no Oka” (Afternoon Hill), a bold, fortress-like structure.

Many of these works are designed to be explored on foot, allowing visitors to climb, walk, and fully engage with the space. Recognized as one of Japan’s 100 Hometown Cultural Assets, Ishiyama Green Space offers a truly distinctive experience shaped by both history and nature.
