Makomanai Takino Cemetery – Hill of the Buddha & Lavender Fields
A Serene Masterpiece of Architecture and Lavender
Makomanai Takino Cemetery, a park-like sanctuary in Sapporo, offers a stunning blend of modern architecture and nature. Its centerpiece, the "Hill of the Buddha," is a magnificent monument designed by world-renowned architect Ando Tadao, opened in 2016. The site provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can enjoy both awe-inspiring design and tranquil landscapes.
The hill holds a massive 13.5-meter Buddha, with only its head peeking through the hollowed hill. In July, 150,000 lavender plants cover the slopes, creating a striking purple sea. Walking along the "Path of the Whispering Wind," visitors are enveloped by the scent of flowers and the surreal sight of the Buddha emerging from the blooms.
To reach the statue, follow a dramatic tunnel that leads to an open-air rotunda. Standing at the Buddha’s feet, you can feel its powerful presence against the sky. With 60% of the grounds dedicated to greenery, it’s an ideal place for quiet reflection. For more floral beauty, the nearby Takino Suzuran Hillside Park is highly recommended.
