Lake Utonai
A Four-Season Sanctuary Home to Nearly 270 Species of Wild Birds
Lake Utonai, Japan’s first officially designated bird sanctuary, is a peaceful wetland where visitors can enjoy migratory birds and the changing beauty of nature throughout the year.
Located in northeastern Tomakomai, Lake Utonai was designated as a wildlife protection area in 1981. From autumn to winter, migratory birds such as whooper swans and greater white-fronted geese gather here to overwinter. In spring, other species stop by the lakeside grasslands, while summer brings the songs of small birds nesting among the reeds.
Walking along the lakeshore, visitors can enjoy the fresh scent of nature and the gentle sounds of birdsong. Observation decks and scenic spots make wildlife viewing easy, while the Nature Center offers binocular rentals and advice for observing birds. Swans, ducks, and seasonal visitors provide memorable encounters for both beginners and experienced birdwatchers.
The lake takes on a different charm throughout the day: shimmering waters at sunrise, peaceful reflections in the afternoon, and silhouettes of returning flocks at sunset. Lake Utonai is a serene destination where visitors can experience birdwatching and the seasonal beauty of Hokkaido’s natural landscapes.
