Lake Utonai
A Four-Season Sanctuary Home to Nearly 270 Species of Wild Birds
Lake Utonai, Japan’s first officially designated bird sanctuary, is a tranquil wetland where visitors can observe migratory birds and appreciate the ever-changing beauty of nature throughout the year.
Located in northeastern Tomakomai, the lake was designated as a wildlife protection area in 1981. From autumn through winter, migratory birds such as whooper swans and greater white-fronted geese gather to overwinter. In spring, other migratory species visit the lakeside grasslands, while summer brings the cheerful songs of small birds nesting in the reeds.
Strolling along the lakeshore, visitors are surrounded by the fresh scent of grasses and trees and the gentle chorus of birdsong. Observation decks and scenic photo spots allow for comfortable wildlife viewing, and at the Nature Center, binoculars are available for rent along with expert advice to enhance your experience. Swans gliding across the water, flocks of ducks, and other birds offer close-up encounters that appeal to both beginners and experienced birdwatchers.
The lake’s scenery changes with the time of day: the water shimmers in the morning light, reflects the peaceful afternoon sun, and silhouettes of returning flocks create a magical scene at sunset. Lake Utonai is a special place where visitors can relax in the serenity of nature while enjoying birdwatching and the distinctive beauty of Hokkaido’s four seasons.
