The Mashu-maru, a Seikan Ferry that once connected Aomori and Hakodate, is open to visitors as a museum where you can experience the atmosphere of a bygone ferry journey.
Permanently moored at Hakodate Port’s former Pier 2, the Mashu-maru has been preserved much as it was during its service. Step aboard to discover the atmosphere of Showa-era ferry travel. The bridge where captains once took command and the wireless room, preserved much as they were during the ferry’s service, allow visitors to see the ship’s instruments up close while imagining the journeys once made across the Tsugaru Strait.
The former Green Class cabins at the front of the ship have been renovated into exhibition rooms, where detailed models and authentic ship parts provide a closer look at the history and role of the Seikan Ferry service. On the open deck, you can enjoy the sea breeze and sweeping views of Mt. Hakodate and the city. You can also use monitor cameras to observe the vehicle deck, normally hidden from view, and get a closer look at the structure and workings of this large ferry.
