Former Iwafune Family Garden (Kousetsuen) & Hakodate MOMI-G Festa
Step into Hokkaido’s Only Nationally Designated Cultural Garden
Discover a peaceful retreat where history and nature meet. At Kousetsuen, elegant architecture and a stunning 100-meter maple avenue create unforgettable seasonal scenery, especially beneath the autumn night sky.
Nestled on a quiet hill within Miharashi Park, the Former Iwafune Family Garden, known as Kousetsuen, is a landscape garden created in the 1890s as a villa for the prominent Iwafune family. Covering about 13.3 hectares, it is the only garden in Hokkaido designated as a National Cultural Property. Visitors can enjoy a unique blend of Eastern and Western design, featuring a brick greenhouse and a traditional Japanese-style pavilion for tea gatherings.
In autumn, the garden becomes a vibrant display as roughly 150 species of trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold. The highlight is the 100-meter maple avenue, where fallen leaves and vivid foliage create a striking seasonal landscape.
From late October, the Hakodate MOMI-G Festa adds a magical atmosphere to the garden. Evening illuminations cast a gentle glow over the colorful leaves, creating a dreamlike scene that contrasts beautifully with the daytime landscape.
