Inoue Yasushi Memorial Museum
Step into the Literary World of a Master
Experience the atmosphere of the Showa era in the author’s study, relocated from his former home in Setagaya.
Located in Asahikawa, the birthplace of Akutagawa Prize-winning author Inoue Yasushi, this museum offers a profound journey through the life and creative world of one of Japan’s most celebrated writers.
The beauty of Asahikawa, Inoue Yasushi’s birthplace, and the essence of his 83-year life are preserved here. The museum displays about 470 precious items, including research notebooks for famous works like Dunhuang and Confucius, as well as his favorite fountain pens. A highlight of the museum is the faithful recreation of the study and drawing room from his former residence in Setagaya, Tokyo. Surrounded by the texture of heavy wooden furniture and the scent of old books, visitors can imagine the daily life of one of the leading figures in the Japanese literary world during the Showa era.
The space is further enriched by works from artists who were close friends of Inoue, such as a ceramic plaque by Hirayama Ikuo and a folding screen by Kaneko Otei, creating an atmosphere akin to a serene art gallery. In the lounge, where natural light pours in through large windows, you can enjoy reading local literature at your leisure. Spending a quiet moment facing his words while gazing at the garden’s seasonal scenery will leave a lasting impression on every visitor.
