Notsuke Peninsula
A breathtaking sand spit stretching into the Sea of Okhotsk
Between the Shiretoko and Nemuro Peninsulas, Notsuke Peninsula reaches out like an arm into the Sea of Okhotsk. Spanning about 26 kilometers, it is Japan’s largest sand spit—formed over time by sand carried along ocean currents. This unique landscape, combined with its intricate coastline, creates a rich natural environment that supports diverse wildlife.
From early May, scenic cruises and clam digging experiences offer visitors the chance to explore the area. In summer, vibrant wildflowers blanket the primeval flower fields, where alpine plants bloom at sea level. You may even spot seals resting quietly along the shore.
In spring and autumn, the traditional sail-powered “utase” net fishing method is still practiced here, catching the prized Hokkai shrimp. This centuries-old technique, dating back to the Edo period, produces shrimp known for their clean yet deeply rich flavor.
As autumn arrives, pampas grass sways in the breeze and salmon fishing begins. In winter, the inner bay freezes over while drift ice reaches the outer sea, creating a dramatic Arctic-like landscape. Nutrient-rich waters carried by ocean currents nurture large, flavorful scallops—a true taste of the region’s rich natural bounty.
