Mt. Rausu Iwaobetsu Trailhead
A gateway to Mt. Rausu, the highest peak in Shiretoko
Rising to 1,661 meters, Mt. Rausu is the highest summit on the Shiretoko Peninsula and is listed among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Known for its alpine flora, the mountain offers a striking landscape where snow can remain even in summer.
Starting from the Iwaobetsu Hot Spring area, the trail leads hikers through dense primeval forests and across snow-filled valleys on the way to the summit. Along the route, the crisp mountain air, the sounds of wildlife, and the ever-changing scenery immerse you in the wild beauty of Shiretoko.
From late July to August, alpine flowers such as Ezo primrose bloom across the slopes, adding vibrant color to the rugged terrain. Upon reaching the summit, a breathtaking panorama unfolds, with sweeping views of the ocean and even Kunashiri Island in the distance—rewarding climbers with a true sense of achievement.
Facilities such as parking and restrooms are available near the trailhead. As the area is home to brown bears, hikers are advised to carry bear bells and bear spray. Please note that a climbing registration is required before entering the trail.
