Kanro Sensui
A Spring Selected as One of Japan’s 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters
Kanro Sensui is a spring near the third station of the Oshidomari hiking trail on Mt. Rishiri. Hikers can stop here to replenish their drinking water.
The spring is about a 20-minute walk from Rishiri Hokuroku Campground, the trailhead for the Oshidomari route. It lies within a natural recreation forest, and visitors reach it by following a trail through the surrounding woodland.
Rain and melting snow on Mt. Rishiri seep into the ground and emerge as spring water. According to local tradition, the name Kanro Sensui reflects the sweet taste people perceived when they drank the water. The spring is one of the island’s notable water sources.
The Ministry of the Environment selected Kanro Sensui as part of Japan’s 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters. It is the northernmost site in the selection and continues to serve as a drinking-water stop for hikers. Its setting also offers an opportunity to learn about the relationship between Mt. Rishiri’s natural environment and the island’s water resources.
