Mikaeridai Observatory
Views of Mt. Rishiri’s Forested Slopes and the Surrounding Coast
Located at about 500 meters above sea level on Mt. Rishiri, Mikaeridai Observatory offers views toward the mountain’s summit, forested slopes, Kutsugata, and the surrounding sea.
Mikaeridai Observatory is located near the 5th station of the Kutsugata Route on Mt. Rishiri in Kutsugata, Rishiri Town. The parking area is accessible by car and has public restrooms. It also serves as the trailhead for the climbing route. From the parking area, a steep, unpaved staircase of about 100 steps leads to the observatory.
From the observatory, visitors can look toward the summit of Mt. Rishiri and view the forested slopes extending across the mountainside below. On clear days with good weather, views extend over Kutsugata, the surrounding sea, and Rebun Island.
In addition to daytime views of the mountain and sea, the site is used for observing the lights of Kutsugata and the night sky. Serving as a starting point for climbing, it is also a place for observing the natural environment of Mt. Rishiri.
