Savor Mukawa’s Prized Shishamo Amid Autumn Drying Racks

Enjoy the unique flavors of Mukawa Shishamo, a rare fish found only along Hokkaido’s Pacific coast and celebrated as one of the region’s signature autumn delicacies.

Raised in the nutrient-rich waters of the Mukawa River system, Mukawa Shishamo was registered as a regional collective trademark in 2006 and has become a symbol of the town’s culinary heritage. Unlike capelin, which is often marketed as shishamo outside Japan, true Hokkaido shishamo is a distinct species found only in limited areas along Hokkaido’s Pacific coast. It is prized for its delicate texture, rich umami, and refined flavor. The name is believed to derive from the Ainu word susuham (“willow leaf”), a reference to the fish’s slender, graceful appearance.

From October to November, during the fishing season, rows of freshly caught shishamo are hung on traditional drying racks throughout the town. This distinctive sight has become one of Mukawa’s most iconic autumn landscapes.

Freshly grilled shishamo offers a savory aroma and concentrated umami, while seasonal shishamo sushi is a rare delicacy available only during this time of year. As one of Mukawa’s most celebrated local specialties, it offers visitors an authentic taste of Hokkaido’s unique food culture.
